spain_flagInternational Spanish Academy Celebration/Fiesta Grande

Each January, we celebrate our designation as an International Spanish Academy (ISA). The older students participate in an assembly with special guests, music performances, flamenco dancers, speakers and more – all to celebrate the Spanish culture. The younger students also have fun creating art projects, singing Spanish songs, and eating traditional Spanish foods.

9th Grade Study Abroad in Spain

Our 9th grade students have the opportunity to study abroad, attending a language school in Salamanca, Spain for 10 days in March. The experience includes touring Madrid, Toledo and Segovia during their week of studies. The cost of the trip is paid for by the students, from scholarships awarded by the NDPA Board of Directors, and from a special fund raiser, the Polar Plunge.

PP Mr Rob 2016Polar Plunge

This is the main fund raiser for our students who plan to participate in the Spain Study Abroad Trip. POET members cut a big hole in the ice at
Fort Buenaventura in Ogden, and students get sponsors to pay for them to jump into the icy waters. Now that’s what we call “Total Immersion!”

Art Auction

POET organizes one of the best school art auctions around where students work together to create artwork that goes up to bid. The event includes a silent auction for wonderful gift baskets of donations from the Layton business community, followed by a dinner and live auction of student art work. This is an extremely successful fundraiser for our school.

Reality Town

In this special activity, our 8th graders get the opportunity to feel what it’s like to be an adult. Students are assigned an occupation based on their GPA. Some students get to be surgeons while others are assigned to be single parents with children trying to make ends meet. Parents volunteer to help with this great learning experience as the students discover the decisions involved in buying or renting a home, purchasing transportation, and obtaining insurance. The students also get to spin the dial of fortune: does the student’s grandmother die and leave a $1000 inheritance, or does a pet need to go to the vet for $200? It’s almost real.

FunRun1Fun Run

In September, the NDPA school community participates in our 5K Fun Run. Hundreds of people gather at NDPA Jr. High for this great event. Adults and children can choose to run 1 mile course or a 5K course. POET organizes this super event for NDPA, and the cost is minimal. The small fee is only to FallCarnivalHcover the costs of the event and the very popular NDPA 5K t-shirt, which students may wear on “Casual Fridays.”

Fall Carnival

This POET sponsored Halloween celebration is for our students and their families. Entire families have a great evening at this community building event.

Field Day

Once again, our POET creates an outstanding end of the year activity for our students. The elementary students walk over to Ellison Park to participate in “Olympic” events and score points for the best cheer. The Jr. High students have fun in the field next to the 5-9 building.

La Noche del Recuerdo

This is the “Night of Remembrance” for our 9th grade students as they get ready to graduate and move on to high school. Students prepare a presentation that represents a culmination of their growth at NDPA during their time at the Jr. High.  Afterwards, the parents and guests leave the building so the students can walk through the building one last time by themselves. It is an evening to remember where our 9th graders have come from and dream about where they will go next.
