Dress Code

Purpose

North Davis Preparatory Academy (the “School”) believes that a mandatory school dress code helps enhance the school environment and that it promotes an atmosphere conducive to appropriate discipline with a minimum need for ongoing intervention, thereby increasing learning opportunities for students by removing many of the distractions and negative or disruptive connotations associated with various types of clothing.

Policy

The administration will determine the School’s dress code. The dress code should be supportive of the purposes set forth above, yet easily understood by parents and students and not overly complicated, restrictive, or burdensome to families. The administration may modify the dress code from year to year in order to address changes in style and other factors. However, the key provisions of the dress code, including the color and style of allowable tops, bottoms, and dresses/jumpers, should typically remain largely consistent from year to year in order to avoid placing undue burden on families.

All students of the School are required to comply with the dress code. Parents are responsible for ensuring that their children wear the appropriate clothing to school. The administration will maintain responsibility for enforcing compliance with the dress code. Teachers and all other staff need only to report to administration uniform infractions that are distractions, negative, or disruptive to class instruction due to the nature of the clothing itself.

To best meet the mission of North Davis Preparatory Academy, the following uniform guidelines have been established. This uniform will enhance the learning environment of our students and cultivate an atmosphere of discipline, equality, and respect.

This policy is intended to create a framework to meet the purpose as stated at the beginning of this policy. As styles change, or if questions arise, the school administration, as the Board of Directors’ designee, has the authority to determine if a student’s dress is in keeping with this policy.

  • Shirts should be of a collared style, plain,with no distracting pictures or writing, and solid color—either white, navy blue, or red.
  • Appropriate collared styles include, but are not limited to are: blouse, polo, oxford, turtleneck, or dress shirt.
  • Solid white, navy blue, or red sweaters or sweatshirts with hoods (hereafter referred to as “hoodies”) in both pullover and zip up styles may be worn in class. Hoodies with the approval of NDPA are also acceptable.
  • If the attire is of a more formal nature, it is permitted any day, not just for games, etc.
  • Skirts, jumpers, shorts, skorts, capris, or pants can be worn. They are to be solid navy blue, solid tan, or school colored plaid. Skirts, shorts, or skorts are to be of reasonable length (a good guide is hands at sides fingertip length). No denim, or basketball style athletic pants/shorts are permitted except for “Spirit Dress Day” or "$ Donation Dress Day" as described below.
  • All accessories should be appropriate for school, should be school colors (red, white, navy blue) or of neutral colors and should not be distracting, negative, or disruptive to class instruction due to the nature of the item itself.
  • Smooth, opaque, cable-knit tights, or leggings can be worn. Appropriate colors include white or navy blue or black.
  • Shoes must not be open-toed or backless. Higher heels create a safety hazard, and cannot be worn during the school day. Shoes should not stand out, distract, be negative, or disruptive to class instruction due to the nature of the shoe itself.
  • Sunglasses should not be worn indoors.

To be worn for all field trips and on other specifically designated occasions. This uniform includes a solid white top (with or without the school logo) and solid navy bottoms that are not denim (or fabrics that appear to be denim).

Clothing may be purchased wherever appropriate styles are available.

  • Dress and grooming standards are part of the Uniform Regulations.
  • Uniforms must be worn during school hours, except under specially designated circumstances such as “Event or $ Donation Dress Day”. Unless otherwise stated, students attending after school activities do not need to adhere to the uniform guidelines.
  • Uniforms will be worn Monday through Friday. Fridays will be designated “Spirit Fridays,” and students may wear blue or black denim pants with their uniform tops.
  • Hair must be kept neat, have a combed appearance, and be appropriate for school. No extreme colors or styles that distract or have negative or disruptive connotations associated with the style itself.
  • Outer wear that is worn for warmth to and from school and at outside recess is not considered a uniform item. Any sweaters or hoodies worn inside the classroom must be consistent with school uniform colors and requirements.

Blue, navy blue or black denim pants or shorts that are of reasonable length (a good guide is hands at sides, fingertip length), with minor holes, may be worn on Spirit Friday Dress Days. Tops should be regular uniform shirts or “spirit shirts” (Fun Run shirts, hoodies, or any school sponsored NDPA shirt). All other uniform regulations apply.

On Event Dress Days, students are still expected to dress in a manner that positively impacts the learning environment. Clothing must be modest, tasteful, and it must not compromise safety standards for our students. The following standards include:

  • Shorts and skirts need to be consistent with NDPA Uniform Policy.
  • No tank tops or spaghetti straps.
  • No bare or stocking feet.
  • No open toe or higher heeled shoes.
  • No clothing that displays obscene, vulgar, lewd, or sexually explicit words, messages, or pictures.
  • No clothing assumed or perceived as gang-related.
  • No midriff or exposed midsection

On $ Donation Dress Day, students may donate $1 to wear non-uniform clothing of their choice. This is optional. All proceeds go toward special activities throughout the year. $ Donation Dress Days are the 1st Friday of every month and can be paid in advance for the entire school year. Students are still expected to dress in a manner that positively impacts the learning environment and follows all event dress day standards. Hats indoors are allowed this day.
